Cuba Chapter5_The Cock Fight

This is the last of the Cuba series, thanks for following this tropical "vacation" adventure. Although there are a few hurdles for US travelers to go to Cuba once you arrive the culture is welcoming and the climbing is world-class at all grades. Highly recommended in all ways! ~reo

  1. Although some people may say it is part of their culture I find this a rather cruel event which is more about gambling then anything else. Placing additional spurs to inflict greater damage during a fight is callous.

  2. Totally understandable sentiments... I wanted put it out there for you all to interpret for yourselves. Most of the young climbers of Vinales could care less about these hugely popular events which says a lot about the positive effect of climbing in the area...hopefully the government realizes such positive benefits of climbing in cuban culture as well!

  3. The Cuba series has been excellent! It's really inspiring to be transported outside my day-to-day "box" as often as possible. I admire your dedication to documenting not just climbing but also the way of life of the places you visit, places that many of us forget exist in the relative comfort of our homes. It's great that you guys can present the sweet with the sour from a sort of anthropological viewpoint as in the Cuba series. I am reminded by these dispatches that there is much to be learned simply by putting yourself out there, experiencing new cultures and new people, and using climbing as a medium for exploring and interpreting the world around us. Thanks guys!

  4. Wow! Really enjoy all your stuff, but the Cuba series especially. I was in Vinales a short while before you and also met Henry and Leo. Great to see their faces again, and the series brought back the awesome memories of Cuba!
Hope the healing goes well Renan.
    Thanks!
